FIRST EDITION (1951) SECOND IMPRESSION (1951)

Dr Jacques May, having spent eight exciting years in Bangkok and Hanoi, recounts his experiences as chief surgeon of the French Hospital in Bangkok, physician to the Royal Palace in Siam, and professor of surgery at the Medical College of Hanoi.

Dr. May's encounters with the Royal princess, whose person was considered too sacred to be examined; with the cultured Englishman who died quickly of an easily controlled disease only because of the 150 pipes of opium he had been smoking daily for years, unknown to anyone but his wife; with the amiable Frenchman whose mission in life was to return to Clermont-Ferrand to sip his Bock at the Caf du Commerce surrounded by his twelve devoted daughters of varied hues - the account of these and other incidents reveals Dr. May's keen eye for the grotesque and amusing.
