A Dream of Red Mansions, also known as Dream of the Red Chamber, is one of the most celebrated Chinese classical novels. Written in the 18th century by Cao Xueqin, with later contributions by Gao E, the novel is a semi-autobiographical work reflecting the decline of the author's aristocratic family.
The story follows Jia Baoyu, a young nobleman, and his relationships with two cousinsLin Daiyu, his true love, and Xue Baochai, his eventual wife. Set against the backdrop of the Jia family's rise and fall, the novel explores themes of love, fate, Confucian values, and the impermanence of wealth and status.
