Hardcover published by Chatto & Windus, 1955. The jacket is edge-worn and rubbed, and has several small chips and tears to the edges. There is a long internal tear on the rear panel, as well as two sticky tape marks where previously taped to the boards.  The boards themselves are clean and square, with some light wear to the edges in places. Internally the first and last pages and inside boards have tape marks, and the name and stamp of a previous owner appears on the inside front board. All pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. "Mr. Faulkner begins with a French regiment mutinying on the Western Front in the spring of 1918. The mutiny is lead by a Corporal and twelve private soldiers. The war comes to a standstill, and we see the causes and results of this extraordinary occurence through a diverse group of characters - the Marshall of the Allied Armies, French and German Generals, a yound English aviator, a company runner who has already made an abortive protest against the war, an American negro, the Corporal, his twelve followers and his women folk."
