This novel recreates the London of previous generations, faded photographs from the family album show Jenny Cole in her teens in the 1890s, one of the first 'lady typewriters', self-consciously posing with a bicycle and wearing the daring new National Dress which reached only to the knees. Another photograph shows her in 1925 as a VAD nurse, nun-like with a tight headdress and starched apron, cuffs and collar. In between is the one showing her as one of Mrs Pankhurst suffragettes, emerging from gaol and force-feeding after her imprisonment under the cat-and-mouse act. Behind these photographs - and earlier sketches reaching back to the early 19th century, before the birth of photography - lies a fascinating and sweeping family story, that of the Coles of South London.
