Almost two decades ago, Marita van der Vyver travelled to France, where she married a Frenchman and settled in the idyllic countryside of Provence.
Having become famous for a novel built on fairy tales, her own life, appropriately, resembled that of a princess who has met her prince. Years later. she and her family moved to a charming house called Place of the Frogs and Marita continued to live her fairy tale one full of surprises and catastrophes, while navigating this foreign country.
A Fountain in France tells Marita's story about moving home the way the French do it. It is also a touching reflection on belonging; what binds the heart to a home and its people; about breaking ties to grow new ones, and about what we take with us when we move on. For Marita, life is an effervescent fountain, always bubbling up with new adventures. Whether you are based in Provence or Perth, Bath or Bloemfontein, this book will show you that a good sense of humour might be the most important qualification if you want to survive being the eternal outsider.
Marita van der Vyver is one of the most popular Afrikaans authors of all time. Best known for the wistfully erotic Griet skryf 'n sprokie, she has written novels for adults, young adults and children, as well as short stories and non-fiction. She is also author of the cookhooks Summer Food in Provence (in association with Alain Claisse, 2010) and Winter Food in Pracence (2014). Her books are translated worldwide in several languages.
