A collection of 4 ambrotypes or collodion glass positives taken by the photographer L.H. Keet in the town of Tulbagh, Western Cape, South Africa. Housed in a four-way daguerreotype case. Each image approximately 7 x 8.5cm. The first image is of Christiaan Bothma and his young son. The second of his wife Susanna Bothma. To the verso of this is an image of Adrien Patis. The man who murdered the husband and wife. On the night of 2 August 1861, Patis, a labourer on a nearby farm, called on the home of the Bothma's, claiming that a neighbour was in distress. Mr Bothma went to his neighbour's aid but was murdered by Patis a short distance from their house. Patis then returned to the house and murdered the wife. Leaving their infant son unharmed. Patis was arrested, tried and hanged for the murder. Condition good. Some oxidation to the frames and an old repair to the spine. Leather case lightly worn. Research articles on this set of images is part of the purchase.
