he South African Air Force (SAAF) fought in Italian East Africa from June 1940 to November 1941 during World War II. The SAAF's role included air combat and providing air support to ground forces. 

First air attack: On June 11, 1940, 12 Squadron's Ju 86s led the SAAF's first air attack of the war

Close Support Flight: The SAAF formed a Close Support Flight of four Gladiators and four Hartebeests

Air combat: The SAAF engaged in air combat with the Italian Regia Aeronautica

Air support: The SAAF provided air support to South African and Allied ground forces
