A Gianelli (Italian - 1907) Sculpture
On offer this magnificent find - a signed sculpture by the famous Master Italian Sculptor Arnaldo Gianelli. The bust of Verdi in recomposed stone (alabaster, marble and resin) stands on an alabaster base. In very nice condition with no chips or cracks. It stands 15.5cm tall and the base has a diameter of 6cm. Below the signature is also "Volterra", the name of the town Gianelli was born in.
Gianelli started his study of sculpture at the young age of ten and went on to graduate from the Royal School of Art in 1924, achieving the status of "Master" at the Nardoni Workshops. He was president of the Alabaster Craftsmen Guild from 1953 to 1961, and in 1970 was awarded the title of "Cavaliere", the Italian equivalent of Knighthood for his many artistic achievements. Among his most famous pieces were 3 prominent works - a completed bust for Dwight D Eisenhower for which he received the American President's personal thanks. Mirko Basaldelia, the famous sculptor, commissioned him to create a three meter high totem for the Boston University. He also produced a bust of the President of Kenya which was commissioned by the Professor Fioravanti of Rome.
