Canthaxanthin is a red/brown carotenoid type antioxidant, found in many fruits and vegetables.
Canthaxanthin dissolves in the fat layer beneath the skin and protects against the free radical damage caused by UV sunlight and the ageing process, which can result in wrinkles, loss of elasticity and skin cancer.
Canthaxanthin produces a sunless tan because it attaches to the layer of fat cells directly beneath the skin. This gives the skin a naturally tanned colour after about 4 weeks of use.
Canthaxanthin won’t cause the yellow colour of older beta-carotene based sunless tanning products, since canthaxanthin is a red/brown carotenoid, unlike the yellow/orange colour of beta-carotene.
