This item is a handled crystal decanter, often referred to as a claret jug. It has a bulbous base and a long, slender neck, a shape popular in Victorian and Edwardian periods.

It is made of clear, potentially lead-free, cut crystal, known for its brilliance and light-refracting qualities.

The body has a rounded, wide base that tapers into a narrow neck. This shape is functional, increasing the surface area of wine exposed to air for aeration while allowing sediment to settle.

The lower portion of the decanter is decorated with an intricate cut or pressed pattern, possibly a variation of the diamond or hobnail cut design.

It features a large, applied glass handle that extends from the upper neck down to the shoulder of the base for easy pouring. An original, multifaceted stopper sits in the neck to seal the contents when not in use.

Decanters like this are used to hold and serve various liquids, typically wine or spirits. For wine, the primary purposes are aeration (allowing the wine to breathe and enhance flavours) and separating the liquid from any sediment that forms in aged bottles. They also add an element of aesthetic elegance to a table setting or home bar.

The decanter has what seems to be a crack or a fault in the crystal where the handle meets the base (please see picture), aside from which it is in good vintage condition.

Height: 31 cm, Diameter of base: 6.2 cm, Capacity: 750 ml
