Produced for "the readers of and contributors to 'Notes and Queries'"an attempt "to collect in one volume, from various sources, some information not otherwise easily accessible, useful and interesting, to book-lovers". The author laments the delay in the production of this volume for various reasons, including that the "unfortunate and deplorable Continental war has deprived me of the promised assistance of literary friends in Germany, as well as in France." It contains ten chapters, including "Useful Receipts" (formulations and methods for treating stains and marks in books, polishing, and to render paper fire-proof, for example), a "Dictionary of Terms", a "Chronology" of important developments in printing, and of the publication of significant works, and a "Typographical Gazeteer", a list of places where printing is "carried on" in Great Britain.

Decorative paper over board, having some loss about the edges, front and rear, and published 1870 by John Wilson. Octavo of 217 pages including index, followed by indexed full-page advertisements of book-sellers of the time, such as H. Sotheran & Co., London, and an errata page. Presentation label to Knysna Public Library is affixed to the front pastedown, dated October 1st 1900, as part of a Deed of Gift by one Doctor G.,H. Clifton. Three small library stamps and the name in pen of a previous owner appear on the following 4 pages, including the title-page verso.
