Hardcover first published 1942 by William Heinemann. The jacket can only be considered remnants, as it is worn and marked and has several large pieces torn from the front and spine. The boards are somewhat battered, but are still square. The name of a previous owner is written in pen on the first end-paper, that is also yellowed at the top, as is the half-title page. All others are clean and unmarked. "Against a broad and terrible background of the war years in China, Lin Yutang develops his novel of three Chinese characters and brings the reader a vivid and intensely personal picture of Chinese life to-day."
