A Mortal Flower. By the author of A Many-splendoured Thing.

The tumultuous years in China between 1928 and 1938 as witnessed by a Eurasian woman: Chiang Kaishek rising to power while Mao Tsetung in his mountain fastness gathers the remains of an almost destroyed communist army and rebuilds it as a force, the Japanese invasion, the Long March, the Student Revolt of 1936, and the millions of Chinese being slaughtered, dying unheard and uncared for. She describes the ambiguous position of Eurasians, her meeting with Nehru and Teilhard de Chardin, when neither was yet famous, and the choice she finally made because "justice demands the evidence of all our life". With historical black and white photos.

First edition published 1966 by Jonathan Cape, London.

Condition: Fair to good. Foxing and brown marks. Jacket has wear and tear at edges.
