A Norah Wellings Brown Velvet Doll with glass eyes ~ circa 1920s-30s

Circa 1920s-30s ~  This is a genuine original cloth (rag) doll made in England by the world renowned Norah Wellings.

An Original Norah Wellings doll. Velvet with molded and hand painted face and glass eyes. Original 1920s-30s clothing.

A Norah Wellings brown velvet rag Doll, with fixed brown glass eyes, which indicates an early creation.  The molded face and painted mouth has little wear.  She is still wearing her original orange velveteen dress and all original jewellery.

Introduced at the British Industry Fair in 1927. Shown in their 1929 catalogue under the heading of "Novelty Dolls". This doll have beautiful, brown glass inset eyes, thick dark brown curly hair, applied velveteen ears, nicely molded features with smiling mouth showing painted teeth and swivel neck. She is 37cm tall and wears velveteen dress with orange felt circles on front & back of her skirt as well as matching hoop earrings, necklace and bangles.  Original sewn-in label on one foot, "Made In England By Norah Wellings".

Norah Wellings was an English fabric doll-maker, whose popular, characterful dolls have been widely copied.  She worked for Chad Valley before leaving to run her own soft toy company with her brother in Wellington, Shropshire, from 1926 to 1960.  Her dolls have molded fabric faces and side glancing eyes.  Earlier dolls have glass eyes, but painted eyes were used from 1930s onwards. They have a label on one limb.

CONDITION: All original and excellent antique condition.  Age related fading, which is to be expected.  No moth-marks, tears, or other damage.  A rare find with all original jewellery and clothing still intact.
