Description: A pair of French provincial faience Botanical plates. 19thCentury. Ref. P/97A+97B
Maker: Nevers France
Date: 19th Century.
History: The city of Nevers, now in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comte region of France, was a centre for manufacturing faience of tin-glazed earthenware pottery, between around 1580 and the early 19th century. The pieces were formed in a mould or on a potters wheel and, sometimes shaped by hand. The colour of the clay used ranged from a grey to a red (as shown on the plates offered). The addition of a lead-tin glaze created an opaque whitish colours, perfect for decorating on.
Description: On offer are two stunning French provincial octagonal-shaped plates, made from a red clay and hand-painted with botanical images of wild flowers and berries. There are no backstamps which does make it a little difficult to date accurately, but consideration was taken in the shape of the plates (notice, no foot-rim) the roughness of the glaze itself, the small blow-hole imperfections, the stilt marks, and the blue, ochre, green and aubergine colours used in the decoration. These are typical colours of the 18th 19 th Century French provincial faience, and these plates may be earlier than the 19th Century.
Condition: To some extent the plates have been expertly and sympathetically restored which signifies their rarity.
Dimensions: Roughly 22.5 cm from corner to corner and the plates stand roughly 2.3 cm 2.5 cm in height

Price: R700.00 for the pair
