Pair of vintage small Chinese Foo dogs or Lion Dogs, mid-century (1950-1960) , Chinese Guardian Lions
Made of ceramic with a color of turquoise glazed, very beautiful detailed

A couple of Foo dog, male and female, are symbols of protection and happiness. the male with his paw on a globe and the female with her paw on a sleeping pup or cub. A fabulous pair for anyone's entrance to their home and a superb house warming present for complete protection to friends or loved ones.

Foo dogs are actually Chinese Guardian Lions. It is Westerners who named them Foo dogs. Some also call them Fu dogs, yet others may call them Buddha dogs. The Chinese will most often refer to them as Shi which means lion. In Japan Foo dogs are known as Komainu. Foo dogs which are placed at the entrance either inside or outside a building are meant to protect your home or workplace from negative energy. It is said these guardian lions will stop anyone with malicious intentions from entering your home. For example envious people or people looking to bad mouth you in any way or people who want to crush your dreams and plans for a better future with their comments. The open mouth of a Foo dog traditionally wards off evil spirits, and the closed mouth ones keep good spirits in. Approx. 23cm high
