In this lovely guide, Dr Piet van Wyk former Head of Research and Communication of the South African Parks Board, presents approximately 250 of southern Africa's most commonly seen trees in a clear and succinct but easily accessible way. Clear colour photographs, from the author's own collection, show the trees as they are most typically seen, and where necessary, these photographs are supplemented by photographs of the flowers, fruit, leaves and/or bark of the tree - if these provide useful identification criteria. Thumbnail silhouettes of leaf shapes are used to lead the reader to the most likely group or family of trees and thus eliminate some of the confusion that arises in trying to identify trees to species' level. The text highlights only those points necessary for identification while distribution maps pinpoint the areas in which the trees occur.
