First Impression, Ravan Press, 1986, Medium-format Paperback - Africana - 252pp. ISBN 0869752359.
Colonel John Graham was a British soldier who established Grahamstown as the Zuurvelds central military post with a number of linked forts along the Fish River, in the immediate aftermath of what is known as the Fourth Cape Eastern Frontier War.
Colonel Grahams plan was to push the Xhosa residents from the Eastern frontier by using military force and terror which included the indiscriminate shooting of women and other civilians, as well as destruction of crops. By 1812 on the deserted farm De Rietfontein, he established Grahams Town as Zuurvelds central military post, with a string of linked forts along the Fish River.
