THE SACAGAWEA DOLLAR COIN WAS THE FIRST CIRCULATING U.S. COIN TO FEATURE AN ACTUAL NATIVE AMERICAN (SCAGAWEA, LEWIS & CLARKS FAMOUS SHOSHONE GUIDE).
 
The Sacagawea Golden Dollar was first minted in 2000 and is America's first golden coin as well as the first circulating coin to feature an identifiable Native American.  Sacagawea was the Native American guide who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804-1806 on their quest to find a route to the Pacific Ocean.  Without her knowledge of the land, the expedition would have failed, and Americas westward expansion would have been delayed for many years.  The coin depicts Sacagawea with her baby, Jean Baptiste, on her back.

The reverse of the coin features an American eagle in flight, as well as 17 stars.  This unusual number of stars symbolizes the 17 states in the Union at the time of Sacagaweas journey with the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
 
THE SACAGAWEA GOLDEN DOLLAR COIN IS MADE PRIMARILY OF A MANGANESE-BRASS ALLOY. THIS ALLOY CONSISTS OF 88.5% COPPER, 6% ZINC, 3.5% MANGANESE, AND 2% NICKEL. THIS COMPOSITION GIVES THE COIN ITS DISTINCTIVE GOLDEN COLOR. 
 
The U.S. Treasury has permanently halted the minting of any additional Sacagawea Dollars for circulation. In 2012, mintage was reduced by more than 90%. That means millions of Sacagawea Dollars anticipated by eager collectors will never be minted making the limited number of available coins highly valued.
