HISTORY ABOUT DORUS RIJKERS THE ''PIPE-SMOKING FISHERMAN'':
''When Harry Haerendel originally painted fisherman, it was after seeing the picture and description of the man who ended up being the main character in it enough finest painting ever painted. The man Harry Haerendel had seen mentioned was Dorus Rijkers. A Dutch sea rescue man who was honored by the king for having saved over 500 people in distress. Thus he became the maritime rescue man who has saved the most people from drowning. Rijkers work spoke for themselves in statisticians, which have never before part of drowning at sea.
But so was Dorus Rijkers's not fishing, many ask. The answer is: of course then. The vast majority of sea rescue men were volunteers who in their time fishermen had gained so much experience of life at sea, that they knew all about the dangers of the sea. Dorus Rijkers had a long career as a volunteer rescuer and the captain of his own boat.
Dorus Rijkers died at the age of 81 and got a funeral there was a general one. A funeral with a big parade where thousands of people showed up to honor fisherman.''
