THIS FINE SPECIMAN OF DIOPTASE WAS RECOVERED FROM THE WORLD FAMOUS TSUMEB COPPER MINE, SITUATED IN THE TOWN OF TSUMEB, NAMIBIA. THIS SPECIMAN MEASURES APPROX 3.4cm LONG AND 2.5cm WIDE AND SUFFERS NO DAMAGE. THE NOW DISUSED DE WET SHAFT HEAD FRAME OF THE MINE SITUATED IN THE MAIN STREET OF TSUMEB WAS THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE MINE WHEN IT WAS STILL OPERATIONAL. THIS "GRAND OLD LADY" OF NAMIBIAN MINING FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS STOPPED PRODUCTION IN 1996 DUE TO THE DEPLETION OF ECONOMICAL ORE. APPARENTLY THE MINE IS NOW COMPLETLY FLOODED AND UNLIKELY TO EVER BE IN USE AGAIN.
