A stunning Davenport 'Whampoa' Trio, 1856. Ref. aug119

This is a stunning trio by Davenport, England from 1856 with the Whampoa pattern #854.
The set has a pale blue wash with hand-painted pink and blue floral oriental designs.
The side plate and the saucer show the impressed 'anchor' mark with the numbers 5 and 6 on each side which signified the date. Above the anchor is the number 10, and around the anchor, the wording 'Davenport'. The saucer also shows a garland of printed flowers around the anchor whilst the cup merely shows the printed garland with the name Davenport and ''Whampoa"
The cup stands 6cm high with a diameter of 9.3cm. The saucer stands 3.5 cm high with a diameter of 14cmn.  in keeping with this period, there is no 'well' in the saucer for the cup to sit in. The side-plate measures 2.5cm high with a diameter of 19cm.  The trio are all in excellent condition with no cracks or chips and all show minimal wear.

John Davenport, born in 1765, began potting at the age of 20 years old, first as a worker but became a partner to Thomas Wolfe.  In 1794 he started his own pottery in Longport, retiring in 1830. His two sons, William and henry carried on the business until Henry died in 1835 and the company became known as 'William Davenport and Company.  It remained in the family until 1887. The company concentrated on fine bone china and was very fashionable, having the Prince Regent, William IV and Queen Adelaide as customers. Pieces from this period are of superb quality, rivalling Spode, Swansea and any other English manufacturer. The name 'Whampoa' is after a port in China.

This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
