An anonymous caller with a voice like a whisper asks lawyer Cinda Hayes a question she cannot answer on a radio phone-in show. Suddenly all Cinda's confidence about dispensing legal advice in sound-bites seems misplaced - behind the question, she senses - lies a pent-up flood of pain. Then nineteen-year-old Mariah contacts her again, desperate to unravel the meaning of the broken memories that have been haunting her, sure they're connected to an incident in which her estranged father hurt her. Cinda knows Mariah's case is tenuous at best.
