A monks bench or hutch table is a piece of furniture where a table top is set onto a chest in such a way that when the table was not in use, the top pivots to a vertical position and becomes the back of a Settle, and this configuration allows easy access to the chest lid which forms the seat of the piece. The monks bench is in lovely condition and sits very well on the ground. The bench measures 91cm long x 40cm wide x 73cm high (to 95cm high when the top is tilted). Blackened wood was very much the style found in Gothic and Jacobean furniture from the mid 1500's to the early Victorian furniture.
