History:This item is part of a lot that belonged to “The Mother of Albertinia,” Anna Sophia Lourens (née Oosthuizen) who owned the farm Grootfontein near Riversdal in the Western Cape.
According to this source: https://www.geni.com/projects/South-Africa-Towns-and-Cities-inc-Founders-and-Origins/1022 the Dutch Reformed Church bought the farm from her in September 1898 and it was divided into erfs. In 1904, reverend J R Albertyn from the church founded the town which is now known as Albertinia. According to Anna’s great grandchild on whose behalf this item is being sold, her great grandmother’s grave in Albertinia has a tribute that says: “Here lies the mother of Albertinia.”
Description of item: This light yellow handmade Volkspele dress is still in a good condition even though a bit crumpled from being in storage for a long time. There are two tiny tears (less than half the length of a matchbox) and at the back where the bodice meets the skirt, a few stitches became undone. There is also a tiny dirty spot on the back of the dress. The bodice measures 46 cm accross the chest and the length of the skirt is about 89 cm.
The lace around the sleeves are still in a good condition.
