A rare an important find this is a Victorian Mantle Pendulum Chime Clock presented by the Natal Government to Captain William Douglas Bell (1808 to 1869) for his long Service Achievement as the first Port Captain of the Durban Harbour. The Clock is possibly dark Rosewood with a brass and glass case that opens to a worn enameled face reading Durban Natal. The makers mark has faded however the mechanism has the makers mark of HP & Co.
The clock is working and the pendulum swings with a resonant bright chime. The face has two wind up's for the clock pendulum and chime. The original key is included with some interesting provenance. The clock will likely need a service. The clock was presented in 1865.
The brass medallion reads
Presented to William Douglas Bell Billy by the Natal Government for dedicated service as 1st Port Captain of Durban Port Natal May 1965
This was in honour for his loyal 25 year service as Durban's first Port Captain under British rule.
