This Famous Works of Art edited by Professor Edward Roworth came out of a recent estate and is in good looking and display condition. Roworth was the Director of the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. The album is complete, and contains 100 cigarette cards issued by the United Tobacco Company. The book was designed and printed by Cape Times Ltd, Cape Town, South Africa. Each card depicts a famous work of art, together with a precis on the artwork written by Edward Roworth. This has the mona lisa on the front cover, and other well known works such as the birth of Venus, Fruitfulness, Painter's Sons, The Chace, Farmer's Family, Village Road, Marie Antoinette, Haywain, Cornfield, Coast of Picardy, Lady Lilith, and Carpenter's Shop. The album has some general wear, it is missing one card, the pages and cards are in very good condition and have no tears. Edward Roworth (1880 - 1964) was a famous portrait artist in South Africa during the first half of the twentieth century. In 1909, he was tasked to paint the National Convention to portray the thirty-three delegates who assembled to plan the formation of the Union of South Africa. On completion, the painting was displayed at Buckingham Palace from 1911 to 1912, from where it was moved to the South African Houses of Parliament in Cape Town. In 1934, Roworth was also commissioned to undertake six panels for South Africa House in London.
