A Vintage Punu Tribal Ceremonial Dancing Mask.

An early Punu tribal ceremonial dancing mask. The Punu are an ethnic group of Gabon and the Republic of Congo.  One of the well known Punu art objects are the white masks with nine dots on the forehead symbolizing the nine Punu clans.  Among iconic works of African art, the Punu masks are one of the most desirable. These masks were worn by dancers standing on high stilts during funerary ceremonies called mukudja. Referring to a young woman's spirit, the white face, covered with kaolin, symbolized reincarnation.  In good vintage condition.
