A fascinating photographic survey of life in South Africa from the early years of the Victorian era to the time of Union in 1910.  Comprising some 370 of the finest and most memorable images available, this book aims to present the widest possible spectrum of people, places and events as they were witnessed, thereby conveying the richness and variety of a vanished way of life.

This is essentially a social history concentrating mainly on the daily life and activities of ordinary people - at work and at play, learning and serving, travelling and celebrating, as well as participating in public occasions or caught up in times of disaster and war.  It also includes nostalgic views of towns and countryside, and portraits of individuals, families and groups forever frozen in emulsion.
