A Year on the Wild Side - Briony Penn.  Penn documents the sprawling biodiversity that can be found on the West Coast of the USA, from orcas to moss to yes, even Bigfoot. Book is filled with lovely illustrations also done by Briony Penn.

This book is a witty commentary on the social and natural history of Vancouver Island. Composed of 52 essays arranged in 12 monthly chapters, this engaging book reveals the magic and humour of the natural world and reminds us of our place within it.

As the weeks and seasons unfold with the turning of the pages, youll be in sync with the living world that surrounds you. Discover what berries are ripe and the best time to pick them. Learn why the termites swarm, where the herring spawn, and when the maple leaves fall. Get up close and personal with fascinating creatures like the snowy owl, the giant Pacific octopus, the river otter, and more.

Briony Penn is a young woman of great energy and many talents. She travels BC extensively: sailing as a naturalist aboard yachts giving ecotours along the coast; visiting projects for The Land Conservancy of which she is a director; conducting research in bioregional mapping and environmental education; and this winter, she found time to ride, unclothed, down Vancouver streets as Lady Godiva. She and her husband design interpretive facilities such as Gwaii Hanas Visitor Centre on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Briony has also taught Environmental Studies, Geography and Restoration of Natural Systems as a sessional lecturer at the University of Victoria. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and symposia across North America.
