Writers the world over are in agreement that for centuries the representation of the city in literature has been indicative of a powerful symbol, yet at the same time represents a complex and problematic concept within Western culture. During the last decade, the city as space has begun to play a more prominent role in Afrikaans literature. This article focuses on the portrayal of the city in Herman Wasserman's short story volume Aan die ander kant van die stad (On the other side of the city). The city can, among other things, serve as a textual and referential reference, as a concrete as well as an abstract space, as a real and mythical space, or as an idea. The city as metaphor is also repeatedly emphasized in literature. Mazzoleni (1993:293), for example, describes the city as a metaphor for the body and the space of identification. The title of Wasserman's volume, On the other side of the city, conspicuously implies a bifocal vision, mainly towards the city itself, but towards the space on the other side as well.
