AN ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT AND HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER ITEM: STUNNING AND VISUALLY IMPACTFUL

LEGENDARY & HEAVY ŠKRDLOVICÉ COBALT BLUE AND BRIGHT GREEN VASE, DESIGNED BY PROF LADISLAV OLIVA (1933-) IN 1979

Rare hand-made art glass from behind the Iron Curtain : a unique opportunity to acquire your very own, very beautiful piece of 21st Century European History!

Beránek Glass was nationalised during communist rule in 1948 and became Škrdlovice glassworks.

Ownership was returned to the Beránek family in 1992 when it became Beránek Glass again.

The factory closed in 2008 and no longer exists : with armies of collectors internationally now snapping up the magnificent items produced by them, their high-quality art glass is becoming both harder to find and more collectable by the day.

This vase is in mint condition and was purchased at the Beranek (Škrdlovice) glass factory at the time of its closure in 2008.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE BARGAIN: A SIMILAR VASE SOLD FOR R18,371 AT STEPHAN WELZ & CO (LOT 705) ON 21 OCTOBER 2015

THIS ITEM DEVIATES FROM THE 1979 DESIGN (PRUNTS INSTEAD OF RIBS) AND WAS PROBABLY A ONCE-OFF DEMONSTRATION ITEM

- Model : 7919 (see archival image at the end)

- Height :  210 mm / Weight : 3,211 kg

PROFILE

Prof Ladislav Oliva (1933-) is one of the most exhibited Czech glass artists and one of the forefathers of contemporary Czech glass design. His compositions impart a feeling of movement and a delicate mixture of moods and emotions. Oliva is noted for his experimentation with sandblasted glass and for a large-scale glass wall that he created for The Worlds Fair Expo 67 in Montreal.

He was employed as a designer for Bohemia Podebrady from 1964 to 1969, after graduating from the School of Applied Arts in Prague, where he studied under Professor Joseph Kaplicky. A tenured professor at the Schools of Glassmaking in Zelezny Brod and Kamenicky Senov from 1969 to 1994, his designs have been featured in many publications within the Czech Republic and throughout the world.

Olivas art has been displayed in many international expositions, including the following distinguished exhibitions: The International Exhibition of Decorative Art in Milan, Glass 59 and New Glass at The Corning Museum of Glass in New York, and The Worlds Fair Expo in Montreal and Osaka.

His numerous international awards include gold medals at the XI. Triennale Milan and at the International Fair in Stuttgart, and first prize for his work at the Exhibition of Czech Glass in Charleroi, Belgium.

* Please note that glass from the mid-20th century is vintage glassware and age related signs of wear such as small fine surface scratches/marks should be expected. The items are hand-made, they may have imperfections such as bubbles, inclusions and lumps within the glass. Tool marks from where they have been shaped and worked in the manufacturing process can often be seen. As this indicates authenticity and forms an inherent part of the character of handmade crystal glass, these are normally not considered as faults by collectors.

* This magnificent vase is an original and rare, hand-made Czech art glass vase (and not Italian Murano, Daum, Kosta Boda, Orrefors, Flygsfors, Swarovski, Leerdam, Val St Lambert or Lalique studio glass). I personally sourced this beauty from the Czech Republic for my own private collection, but with retirement looming on the horizon this beauty requires a new home.
