Drostdy Potteries, or more accurately Grahamstown Pottery, was a highly significant South African ceramic manufacturer that operated primarily from 1948 to 1968, and later under new ownership until the mid-1980s. It is a well-regarded and highly collectable brand in South Africa.
The pottery was established in Grahamstown (now Makhanda), South Africa, in 1948, following earlier initiatives to exploit local rich clay deposits. The name "Drostdy" came from its location in the historic Drostdy building area of the town. Drostdy Ware is known for a style often described as Anglo-Oriental, which blended European and African artistic traditions. A notable range featured intricate, hand-painted reproductions of San rock paintings and other indigenous motifs like plants and animals, capturing South Africa's natural beauty. The company produced two main lines: Drostdy Ware: This line focused on decorative and fancy items, including vases, figurines, and the hand-painted crockery with San art motifs, As well as Cookery Nook Kitchenware: This was a more functional, inexpensive, monochrome range of oven-to-table ware, which included items like the coffee set.
