 Acacia caffra

Scientific name:  Senegalia caffra

Common names: Hook-thorn, Gewone Haakdoring (A), Umtholo (Z)

It is a beautiful tree that occurs in Southern Africa.  It grows up to 10 meters tall.  The tree is deciduous and older plants are resistant to frost, fire and drought.  This is one of the earliest to flower in spring, producing scented flower spikes.

The trunk is often crooked, which will give this tree fantastic character in your garden.  The growth rate is about 70 to 90 cm per year.  This tree gives light shade which will allow enough light through to enable lawn to grow beneath.  It responds well to pruning, so you can shape the tree to suit your own desires.  Avoid planting within 3 meters to pavings, buildings or swimming pools etc

Plant this indigenous tree to attract Bees, Birds and other pollinating insects to your garden.
