In July 2007, Lewis Gordon Pugh became the first person to swim at the North Pole, in temperatures that would kill a normal person, primarily to raise awareness of climate change. Nicknamed 'the human polar bear' for his ability to raise his body temperature at will.

A former SAS soldier, Lewis Gordon Pugh is the only person to have swum long distance in all 5 oceans of the world, his extraordinary efforts undertaken primarily to raise awareness of climate change. In August 2006 he became the first person to swim the length of the Thames from source to sea and, in February 2007, the first to swim at the North Pole.
