 Acokanthera oblongifolia was and is still used by the Bushman as a poison to cover the tips of Arrows for hunting.

Cultivation: Well-drained soil in a sunny position

Features: Dark green leaves tinged with purple; white sweet-scented flowers in spring

Uses: Hedge Screen Shrub borders Seaside gardens

Description: Native to the coastal zone of eastern South Africa and adjacent Mozambique, this is the more ornamental of the 2 cultivated species. A shrub of around 3 m, its handsome foliage is often tinged purple, coloring more deeply in winter.

Growth Habit: Erect with dense branching

Comments: All parts of this plant is poisonous
