Acorus calamus or Sweet Flag as it is commonly known is a grass like, aromatic perennial with long, narrow, erect leaves rising to a height of 150cm. This plant emerges from the water with a 2-edged stalk, with an outward-jutting club-like spadix bearing tiny, greenish-yellow flowers. The root stocks of this aromatic plant are used as a natural insecticide and an ingredient of perfumes! The rootstocks were once used as a food additive as well. Habitats include sedge meadows that are prone to flooding, edges of small lakes and ponds, marshes, swamps, seeps and springs, and wetland restorations.
