System Overview Unlike standard cartridge or disc consoles, the Action Max did not process full game graphics or read game media directly. Instead, it acted as a tracking and scoring peripheral that ran alongside a standard home VCR. Players played pre-recorded live-action or animated FMV (Full Motion Video) footage on their TV via VHS tape while the Action Max tracked hits, misses, and reaction speed. Display: 2-character, 7-segment red LED score display. Audio: Built-in internal speaker for arcade sound effects, hit/miss chirps, and game alerts. Port Setup: Front/Side Jacks: Standard 3.5 mm jacks for connecting the included light gun (Max Ray Gun) and the TV target sensor (a light sensor attached via suction cup to the corner of the TV screen). Top Controls: Volume adjust, score reset button, and mode selection switches. How It Works:The player attaches a small photocell sensor with a suction cup to a corner of the CRT TV screen. The VHS tape plays live-action footage containing flashing target markers. The sensor reads target timing signals directly off the video stream. Aiming and pulling the trigger on the light gun registers a hit if timed correctly with the video signal. The Action Max tracks points on its LED display. Since the VHS video plays identically every time regardless of accuracy, you cannot technically "win" or "lose" a levelthe console simply acts as an external scorekeeper.
