Common Name: China Flower Adenandra is a genus of evergreen shrubs, commonly known as Buchu, which belongs to the citrus family, Rutaceae. The entire genus is indigenous to South Africa. The plants have oil glands in the leaves which give off a distinctive fragrant aroma. The leaves are small and almost scale-like and stalkless or almost stalkless. The eye-catching flowers have five petals, and are pink, white or a mixture of the two. Adenandra are grown by gardeners for their ornamental and aromatic value. Adenandra uniflora has glistening porcelain-like flowers over a long season that makes this rare aromatic South African shrub a collector must try. It attracts insects, butterflies and bees to the garden and only grows 60 cm tall & 90 cm wide forming a densely branched compact evergreen shrub with small tightly held shiny green oval shaped leaves which release a distinctive anise-seed scent when touched. Opening from red buds in mid-winter to spring, the 2.5 cm single white flowers sport red veins above slender reddish branches creating an irresistible show. Valued as a rock garden, patio, or container subject, it can also be used as the subject for the art of bonsai! Native to the Fynbos area, it appreciates an acid soil, so add peat to a well-drained mixture for best results. Flowering stems can be used in floral bouquets or in a mix bunch of flowers displayed in a vase. Adenandra naturally occurs in mixed fynbos and ideally should be used in this way in a garden.
