Professor Murdock's book makes two major contributions to knowledge about African peoples. It provides, in the first instance, a comprehensive ethnographic survey of the whole continent, including the Mediterranean region and Madagascar. Secondly, the framework used in this classification is a reconstruction of the formation and distribution of the population of Africa and its diverse cultures.
