ON AUCTION IS A HISTORICAL 1969 MAP OF AFRICA AND SOUTHERN AFRICA. PRODUCED BY MAP STUDIO AND PUBLISHED AS A PERSONALITY MAGAZINE SUPPLEMENT ON 28 AUG 1969. IT IS POSTER SIZE 100CM WIDE AND 66CM HIGH.

THIS MAP IS A WINDOW INTO THE PAST THAT ALLOWS YOU TO EXPLORE AFRICA AS IT WAS OVER 50 YEARS AGO AT A TIME WHEN MANY AFRICAN COUNTRIES JUST ACHIEVED INDEPENDENCE FROM COLONIAL RULE. 

Look out for Rhodesia: a country that existed in that name from 1965 to 1979. Named after Cecil Rhodes, it was formed by a predominantly white minority government that unilaterally declared independence from Britain in 1965. 

South Africa is still divided into the old provinces of Transvaal, Natal, Orange Free State and the Cape of Good Hope.

Also notice the dates of Independence for Zambia (1964), Botswana (1966), Lesotho (1966), Swaziland (1968), Tanzania (1964), Kenya (1963), Sudan (1956), Uganda (1962), Algeria (1962), Niger (1960), Nigeria (1960), Ghana (1957), Ivory Coast (1960).

PERSONALITY MAGAZINE (1957-1970s):
The magazine was first a South African general interest magazine called The Outspan from 1927 to 1957, followed by a fortnightly publication called Personality from 1957 to early 1970s. It was published in Bloemfontein and described as a "South Africa's Weekly for Everybody". Personality continued the legacy of its predecessor, and was one of the best-loved and most widely-read magazines in English-speaking South Africa. As the 1970s decade progressed, it was sold alongside other magazines of the era.
