In the continent of Africa, indigenous art is found almost exclusively south of the Sahara desert; to the North are the Islamic countries whose art resembles that of the Middle East and the Arab World.
Most of the examples of art in African societies showcased and discussed in this volume have come from Nigeria. The author chose to examine the place of art in society in the context of this one area as a point of departure, with other examples from the rest of Africa providing a broader perspective.
