African crucible. An ethico-religious study with special reference to the Shona-speaking people by Michael Gelfand

Professor Geldand, author of this book, was Professor of Medicine with special reference to Africa, at the University College of Rhodesia. Early in his career, he realized the supreme importance of understanding the background of his African patients. Early too, in his research into that background, he began to share with the general public, the results of his tireless research by writing these books on the customs of the African people of Rhodesia. The most striking feature of the traditional African is the depth of his religious devotion. He is utterly bound to his ancestral spirits whose ethical and moral code can hardly be bettered. It is this appreciation of the spiritual world that makes it possible for the African to come to terms with Christianity and to accept it. Today many Shona believe in both religions although in times of stress they readily return to the faith of their forefathers. Professor Gelfand also deals with the ethics and morals of the Shona peoples, who inhabit the greater part of Rhodesia and number about three million. A considerable part of the book describes their customs and philosophy.
