A history of the second half of the 19th Century in South Africa, through the biographies of three key figures, Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic, Cecil Rhodes, financier and politician, sometime Premier of the Cape, driver of the invasion and settlement of Matabeleland and Mashonaland, and creator of the Rhodesias. Lobengula, the King of the Matabeles until defeated by the settlers in 1893, makes up the third corner of the triangle. A surprisingly readable history of a very complex time in the history of South Africa, and the annexation of the lands north and south of the Zambesi by the UK, under the British South Africa Chartered Company. That the book was written in 1946, just after the second world war, and before the ascendency of the Nationalist Party and Apartheid in South Africa, give the book a particular and unusual slant.
