'In April 1997, addressing the Corporate Council on Africa in Chantilly in the United States of America, Thabo Mbeki said: 'Those who have eyes to see, let them see. The African renaissance is upon us: On 28 and 29 September 1998, approximately 470 people gathered at on historic conference in Johannesburg to heed this call for an African rebirth. The African Renaissance Conference brought together leading business people, politicians, academics and intellectuals from all over Africa, and as far abroad as the United States of America and Europe, as well as 'ordinary people'. They came to define the concept of 'an African', to build bridges and linkages among Africans, to discuss Africa's role in the global community, and to devise strategies that would ensure the prosperity of the continent and its people. African Renaissance: The New Struggle contains 30 essays based on papers and speeches delivered at the conference. Their subject matter ranges from overviews of Africa's history - dealing with slavery and colonialism, but also with Africa's proud scientific and cultural heritage - to moral renewal, culture and education, political and economic transformation, science and technology, and the role of the media and telecommunications.
