The main purpose of this book is to introduce the old to the young; to enable English-speaking readers to understand something of the Afrikaans poetic tradition. Afrikaans readers too, may find pleasure and possibly new meaning in the poems they love. In their selection the authors have given due weight to the historical development of the Afrikaans language, because the poets have played  a major part in that development.
