The book covers the period 1780 - 1850 and is a collection of explanatory and critical comments on 140 key documents (Letters, speeches, manifestos, reports, diary entries, etc.) of Afrikaners over that period. Many of these have been published, or translated into English before. The authors try to demonstrate the pre-Nationalist origins and development of Afrikaner political thought... their thinking on labour, legal, social and constitutional issues.
