Thanks to a wonderfully talented Twine trio by the name of Afrotenor, classical opera is enjoying face-lift, mzantsi style.

Who would have thought that something as far removed from Africa as Italian, French and German opera could be interpreted and elevated to world-class standards by a group of unassuming, but hugely gifted men passionate about performance? "We all share a great love for the theatre," Agos confirms. "Commercial opera in a local context is literally non-existent, but I think all of that is about to change," he smiles.

Comprising Given Nabele (25) Lucky Sibande (27) and Agos Moahi (36) the three have been singing together and performing to audiences from as close as Roodepoort in Gauteng to as far a field as Hong Kong and Rome and New York for the past six years.

Having first met up whilst two thirds of what is today Afro Tenors were studying at Tshwane University of Technology, the three friends have only recently decided to record their first compilation of songs together. "We have been working towards this moment for a long time," Agos agrees. Rather than replicate some of their most memorable arias, the three decided to dive into African classics, the likes of "Pata, Pata", "Meadowlands" and "Malaika" the trio chose to breathe classical and very powerful operatic life into songs some the staple of tradition and storytelling.

"It's important to us that we are successful in our own country before we travel back overseas and share this album with the rest of the world," Moani insists. "There are so many places and many, many people that today have no idea who we are and more critically little knowledge of our style of music. If we are able to make people happy with the songs and also have them grow to love opera as an art then we'll all be more than happy."

Recorded in Erasmia, just outside of Pretoria, the albums 14 tracks features both orchestral and traditional arrangements all constructed under the watchful eye of producer Steve Dyer. "We worked hard to create unique renditions of all of the tracks," Lucky tells of the recording process. "For many of these songs to be done in an operatic setting, something which, until now has never been done before, which took some doing. The entire mood of many tracks changed because of it, which makes for very interesting listening. It's important to us that each and every song we perform carries with it something that is uniquely our own."

For many it will be a first time introduction into the operatic world, for others a refreshing arrangement of songs delivered by three of this country's finest. All with extensive CV's that sport leading roles in the likes of Laboheme and the operatic rendition of Cry The Beloved Country, Lost In The Stars, these young men have crossed language, culture and perception barriers to arrive more qualified than many of their international peers. Given, Lucky Agos should therefore not only to be applauded and awarded for a sterling debut, but also for their essential and ongoing contribution to our heritage and arts - classic, contemporary and most importantly, South African.
