10 x Agave striata seeds

The agave striata, Agave striata, is a hardy, slow-growing succulent native to semi-arid regions of northern Mexico. It is typically found on rocky slopes, dry hillsides, and limestone-rich soils, where it thrives under intense sun and very low rainfall conditions.

This species forms a dense, symmetrical rosette of long, slender, needle-like leaves that are stiff, sharply pointed, and grey-green in colour. The narrow leaf shape gives the plant a refined, almost grass-like appearance compared to broader-leaved agaves. Mature plants can eventually produce a tall flowering stalk, sometimes several metres high, bearing clusters of yellowish-green flowers. Like most agaves, the main rosette dies after flowering, but it may produce offsets over time.

Agave striata is well adapted to extreme drought and nutrient-poor soils, making it highly resilient in harsh environments. It plays a role in stabilising dry landscapes and providing structure in desert ecosystems. Its tough, fibrous leaves also help it withstand grazing and environmental stress.

Growing Agave striata is relatively easy in dry, sunny climates. It requires full sun and very well-drained soil, ideally sandy or gravelly, to prevent root rot. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and should be watered sparingly. It can tolerate light frost, especially when mature, but performs best in warm, dry conditions. With minimal care, it develops into a striking architectural plant suited to rock gardens and xeriscaping.
