Air Power: A Centennial Appraisal is a major study of military aviation written by Air Vice-Marshal R. A. Tony Mason, a senior Royal Air Force officer and defence scholar. The book was first published in 1994 by Brasseys.
It examines the first 100 years of military air powerfrom the early use of aircraft in warfare to the strategic role of air forces at the end of the Cold Warand explores how air power might evolve in the 21st century.
The book was written at a time of major geopolitical change after the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Mason tries to answer questions such as:
What role will air power play in the new international security environment?
How decisive is air power compared with land and naval forces?
How should air power be used in peacekeeping and limited conflicts?
What lessons were learned from modern conflicts like the 1991 Gulf War?
The work is therefore both historical and analytical, looking backward over a century while also trying to forecast future military strategy.
